COX enzyme: Types, Examples, Side effect in details
Introduction:
Cyclooxygenase (COX) is the enzyme used to produce prostaglandins. There are two types of COX enzymes, COX1 and COX2. Both enzymes produce prostaglandins that promote, pain, inflammation, and fever; however, only COX1 produces prostaglandins activate platelets and protest the stomach and intestinal lining.
Cyclooxygenase 1 (COX1):
Cox1 serve some "housekeeping" functions in the body, such as helping to protect the gastrointestinal tract. COX1 is essential for the normal body function so, during the inhibition of COX enzyme COX1 shouldn't be disturb. NSAID(Aspirin, Diclofenac, etc) are the drugs used for the inhibition of COX enzymes but these drugs also inhibit the production of COX1 also which cause ulcers in the stomach and intestines and increase the risk of bleeding.
Cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2):
The COX2 enzyme is produced prostaglandin which is responsible for pain, inflammation, etc. COX 2 mediation is especially recommended for those patients who have a gastrointestinal bleeding disorder or anticoagulant medication. The COX2 inhibitor also helps to prevent the gastric ulcer. This medication is prescribed to the patient having the following disorder;

- Acute pain (for example, sports injuries)
Examples of COX2 inhibitor:
- Celecoxib
- Rofecoxib(Effect on the heart)
- Valdecoxib(Effect on the heart)

Side effect of COX2 inhibitor:
- There are some common side effect of the Cox2 inhibitor.
